Practical Ways To Help When You're Feeling Overwhelmed

Practical Ways to Manage Stress and Prevent Burnout

Have you ever found yourself thinking...

*‘I can’t keep going like this, but I don’t know what else to do.’

Many people experiencing stress and burnout don’t suddenly hit a wall. Instead, they gradually become accustomed to carrying more, doing more, and pushing through exhaustion until feeling overwhelmed becomes their normal. They continue to ‘soldier on’ because they can’t see another option.

1. Acknowledge Where You Are

The first step is honesty.

Ask yourself…

· How am I really feeling?
· What is currently draining my energy?
· What am I struggling with most?

Many of us spend so much time coping that we never stop to assess what we actually need.
Awareness is not weakness. It’s the starting point for change.

2. Stop Treating Rest as a Reward

Rest isn’t something you earn once everything is finished – yet many of us see it as that.
If you’re waiting until your workload disappears before taking a break, you’ll likely be waiting a long time.

Build small moments of recovery into your day..

· Take a proper lunch break.
· Step away from your desk.
· Go for a short walk.
· Spend a few minutes breathing deeply or stretching.

Small pauses help prevent stress from building into burnout.

3. Focus on What You Can Control

When we’re overwhelmed, it’s easy to become consumed by everything that feels out of our control.

Instead, ask..

‘What is one thing I can influence today?’

It might be..
· Setting a boundary.
· Asking for support.
· Prioritising one task over another.
· Saying no to an additional commitment.
· Taking that proper lunch break.

Small actions create momentum.

4. Challenge the Belief That You Have to Do Everything

Many people experiencing burnout are highly capable, conscientious individuals who carry enormous responsibility, but doing everything yourself isn’t sustainable.

Consider..
· What can be delegated?
· What can wait?
· What can be simplified?
· Who could support you?

Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is ask for help.

Create Boundaries Around Your Time and Energy

Boundaries aren’t about keeping people out - they’re about protecting your wellbeing.
This might look like..
· Finishing work on time.
· Turning off email notifications.
· Protecting personal time in your diary.
· Not responding to every request immediately.

Every time you protect your energy, you’re investing in your long-term wellbeing.

6. Reconnect With What Refuels You

When life becomes overwhelming, the things that nourish us are often the first things to disappear.

Ask yourself:

· What helps me feel calm?
· What brings me joy?
· What helps me feel like myself?

Whether it’s reading, exercising, spending time in nature, connecting with friends, or simply having a quiet cup of coffee, make space for the activities that replenish you.

Remember…
You don’t have to wait until you’re completely burnt out before making changes.
The earlier we recognise the signs of stress and overwhelm, the easier it is to take action.

Burnout recovery isn’t about becoming a different person. It’s about creating a healthier, more sustainable way of living and working.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start, know that support is available. Sometimes a conversation can help you gain clarity, identify what’s contributing to the stress, and explore practical ways forward.

Take care of yourself because YOU matter too.

Warmest wishes,
